A little over a year ago I read a book to try to be of help to my nephew who is on the autism spectrum. I thought I could write up some notes for my sister in law to save her some time. I read the book Healing Our Autistic Children; A Medical Plan for Restoring Your Child’s Health by Julie A. Buckley, MD. She is a pediatrician and a parent of a child with autism. I felt like I was reading a book about myself and so many health issues I had to address to get well, candida, digestion, detoxing with glutathione, IV vitamins, testing for vitamin, mineral and toxic metals. I find any research I do on autism usually applies to me too so I have become fascinated with what I learn from research on autism and makes me so motivated to help my sister in law and anyone else who has autism.

I find the best information from doctors who had to find answers for themselves or their children. This book was very eye-opening. I never imagined what I would learn. I did write up a 15 page synopsis or basically condensing down to the main treatment points this doctor makes. She says there are 5 basic truths about autism:

  1. Autism is a medical illness that only looks like a psychiatric disorder.
  2. Autism as well as other disorders that fall on the autism spectrum are treatable. They include ADD, oppositional defiant disorder, Asperger’s syndrome and many other learning disabilities.
  3. Autism is a series of vicious biological and chemical cycles gone awry within a child’s body. These cycles interact impacting immune function, gut function, and methylation chemistry among others.
  4. Biological intervention is about breaking vicious cycles at the cellular level.
  5. There are safe and effective starting points for each step of the biomedical intervention process.

This is biological issue. I wrote that 15 page paper over a year ago and just heard that my nephew just had another seizure. I wanted again to help out my sister in law and started a small amount of research online that I wanted to post here because while it is elemental it is a starting point as that doctor above says.

Just a few statistics

autism and epilepsy (seizures of unknown cause), each occur in around 1 percent of the general population. But epilepsy rates among those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), range from 20 to 40 percent, with the highest rates among those most severely impaired by autism.  Conversely, about 5 percent of children who develop epilepsy in childhood go on to develop autism. http://blog.autismspeaks.org/2011/08/05/how-common-are-seizures-among-people-with-autism-and-what-can-help/

Minerals are essential nutrients. Low levels of the minerals sodium, calcium, and magnesium can alter the electrical activity of brain cells and cause seizures. http://www.epilepsy.com/learn/triggers-seizures/nutritional-deficiencies

this next statistic is from a site selling a detox product, what they say is very important.

Heavy metals can replace the body’s needed minerals, for instance, if there is a low amount of calcium in the body and lead is present, Lead will replace calcium in the bones, weakening them and causing osteoporosis. Lead also replaces calcium in the blood cells, damaging the blood and causing a severe form of anemia.

Lead may then go to the brain, where it replaces calcium, iron, magnesium and other vital elements that are found there causing all sorts of mental issues. Cadmium will replace zinc in a male’s testicles as well as in a woman’s ovaries, causing countless reproductive issues. Male and female sexual fluids are rich in zinc, when replaced with cadmium this can cause low sperm counts, impotence in men, reduced fertility in women, and increased libido in women. http://www.pureliquidzeolite.com/zeolites-remove-heavy-metals-in-5-7-hours/

In addition to being a cellular toxin, lead competes with calcium in the body, which can cause various malfunctions in calcium metabolism including a decrease in neurotransmitter (chemicals that relay messages along nerve cells) release and blockade of calcium channels. The central nervous system appears to be affected to the greatest degree by lead toxicity, and this can explain the many neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with exposure to this heavy metal.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms of chronic lead exposure include:

1.Headaches

2.Poor memory

3.Inability to concentrate

4.Attention deficit

5.Aberrant behavior

6.Irritability

7.Temper Tantrums

8.Fearfulness

9.Insomnia

10.Lowered IQ

11.Difficulty with the reading, writing, language, visual and motor skills

Mercury is considered by many to be even more toxic than lead. Although mercury is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, mercury vapor is easily taken in through the lungs and readily passes into the brain. Once in the body, mercury also concentrates in the nerves, liver, and especially the kidneys. Mercury is a potent cellular toxin and is known to decrease neurotransmitter production, disrupt important processes within the nerve cells, and decrease important hormones such as thyroid and testosterone.

In addition to amalgam fillings, common sources of mercury include pesticides, laxatives, batteries, paper and pulp products manufacturing, drinking water, and paint products.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with mercury toxicity include:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Hallucinations
  • Memory loss
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Drowsiness
  • Emotional instability
  • Depression
  • Poor cognitive function

My thoughts on all of this are that:

  1. It’s important to work with a functional medicine doctor to determine nutritional deficiencies and toxic metals in the body.
  2. Make sure you have the best diet possible to get minerals and vitamins not excluding either remembering that vitamins don’t work without minerals so minerals may be more important to figure out than vitamins.
  3. There are so many similarities with people who have MTHFR genetic defect and people with autism.
  4. Digestion and detox are paramount when addressing autism.
  5. Don’t ignore the problem, issues don’t get better with time unless you address the root causes.A little over a year ago I read a book to try to be of help to my nephew who is on the autism spectrum.
